NATIONAL CONTACT LENS EXAM OUTLINE
STATION 1 - KERATOMETRY AND PRESCRIPTION INTERPRETATION
In Part A of this station the candidate will be
required to take the K-readings of a model. In Part B the candidate
will be presented with 2 case studies, they will be required
to answer a series of questions dealing with prescription interpretation
relating to the case studies. The candidate will be given 35
minutes to complete this station.
STATION 2 - PATHOLOGY
In this station the candidate will be provided
with a series of photos of various eye conditions or anomalies.
The candidate is to identify the condition in each photo. In
Part B the candidate will be provided with a series of photos
of various eye conditions. The candidate will identify the condition
in each photo and answer a multiple choice question regarding
the condition. The candidate will be given 30 minutes to complete
this station.
STATION 3 - VERIFICATION AND LENS DESIGN
In Part A of this station the candidate will be
provided with a series of lenses. Using a radiuscope, lensometer,
and diameter guage the candidate will be required to measure
the back vertex power, base curve, and diameter of the lenses
and identify the lens design. In Part B the candidate will be
provided with a series of lenses on which they will answer a
corresponding multiple choice question. The candidate is given
70 minutes to complete this station.
STATION 4 - INSERTION AND REMOVAL
In this station the candidate will be required
to insert and remove a soft and hard lens on a model. The candidate
will also be required to invert the models eyelid. The candidate
is given 30 minutes to complete this station.
STATION 5 - FOLLOW-UP
In Part A of this station the candidate will be
required to demonstrate various forms of illumination using
the slit lamp. In Part B the candidate will be provided with
a case study of a customer coming in for their six month follow-up
appointment. The candidate will perform a routine follow-up
examination for the customer. In Part C the candidate will be
given three case scenarios in which the client is experiencing
problems with their contact lenses. The candidate must determine
what problem the customer is experiencing. The candidate is
given 55 minutes to complete this station.
The pass mark for the examination is a 68% overall.
